Fame
Pomarede
has been made famous (by Australian author) Mary Moody’s delightful
books ('Last Tango in Toulouse', 'Au Revoir', and 'Lunch
with Madame Murat') about the local characters of the area
and her interesting experiences and challenges that she has
encountered while staying in her second home in the neighboring
village. (3km or a delightful ˝ hour bush walk, or 1 hour if
you dawdle and explore side tracks along the way). In fact if
you are familiar with this latest book, take note of the photo
on the front cover.....it's our back yard! (well,
the view we have at least).
Food
Dining
in Madame Murat’s restaurant is a special experience not to
be missed (just across the road). While there, you are likely
to come across some of the very same colorful characters described
in Mary’s books, as it’s the favored lunching spot of the area.
Mary’s books include Au Revoir, Last Tango in Toulouse
and most recently “Lunch with Madame Murat”, which
has some really fantastic photos of the area in and around Pomarede
as well as some of the delicious local recipes you will experience
as you dine in this historical restaurant.
Markets
are an integral part of French village life. Immerse yourself
in the culture as you wander around the various food stalls
selling fresh local produce and home made goods. Grab yourself
a basket and treat yourself to fresh baguettes, locals wines
and cheeses, fresh fruit and vegetables, home made sweets and
jams, local meats- ham, salami or even live produce and of course
the famed French foi gras. |
Village
life
The
little village has around 140 permanent residents, which may
expand to maybe160 during the height of the summer season. So
as you can imagine it is a great place to take it easy, and
have your own romantic French adventure, get to know the locals
and the local delights. (They are most passionate about FOOD
and WINE!). Well, the men like to chat to pretty women too,
I guess that’s universal!
It is an important to note an interesting event that occurs
during the summer time called the "Vide Grenier'. This
is similar to a garage sale or even a car boot sale, but on
a much larger scale. It happens at various villages on differing
days, to ensure you do not miss out. While the 'vide grenier'
actually translates to 'empty attic', it is primarily for the
sale of antiques or 'brocante' as the French call it. The 'Vide
Grenier' takes over the whole town in much the same way as the
popular French food markets; with each street full of tables,
every table full of bric-a-brac and old curios and many reasonably
priced bargains to be found. Find a treasure of old France to
take home with you to evoke lifelong memories of this journey.
