Katherine
Sabathie is an Australian artist, now living, painting and
creating her life with her French husband in South West France.
"My earliest memories of what I
wanted to be when I grew up was “an artist”
fulfilling this dream was put on hold for many years due to family
commitments . In 1998 I began to study, paint and draw in earnest.
Studying
formally with RMIT Melbourne and having had the opportunity to study
with
some wonderful and highly qualified private tutors. This helped refine
my
technique and enabled me explore many painting mediums. I now focus
purely
on watercolor, because it is one of the most challenging mediums. It
allows
the expression of wondrous passages of light; I adore its luminosity and
transparency, the alchemy of pigment, water and paper.
There is a balance between freedom and control, with sensuousness and
richness in working with such a delicate yet powerful medium. In my work
I
am attempting to create a sense of inner tranquility and oneness, where
the
sense of time is lost. This is my humble attempt to counteract all the
chaos, conflict and troubles “out there”. Having worked as a
natural
therapist and healer for 20 years I am strongly aware of the great need
for
inner healing.
In my current works I am expanding my appreciation of transparent color
and
the light of South West France, which is very different to the light of
Eastern Australia. I am reminded of the timelessness of the wonderful
landscape and ancient architecture that has been imbued with a rich
tapestry
of color and texture. Floral paintings give me the opportunity to
‘play’
with water, transparent pigment and paper to express a riot of light, color
and beauty. Also I am fascinated in capturing a moment when people are
completely absorbed in their activity, which is likened to caressing a
moment of bliss". |
